Norwegian Fishing Boats Warned: Herring Catches too Small

17 Oct, 2024

The Norwegian Directorate of Fisheries and Coast Guard recently carried out a number of inspections on Norwegian herring trawlers in the south-eastern North Sea, and the results are alarming.

Some inspections revealed that up to 70 per cent of the herring caught was below the legal size.

Such high levels of undersized fish in the catch are a long-term threat to the entire herring stock in the area. Both authorities are now calling on the fishing fleet to change their fishing practices to avoid illegal fishing.

‘Violations of the rules on minimum sizes can lead to administrative sanctions and penalties,’ says the Norwegian Directorate of Fisheries in a press release.
