The UN’s sustainability goals aimed for 10 percent of the world’s oceans to be protected by 2020, and the same goal applied in Sweden. We reached that goal. Today, it is estimated that 14 percent of Swedish waters are protected areas, although there are large geographical differences in the proportion of sea areas that are protected. However, in several protected areas, human impact such as trawling and shipping is widely allowed, and the question is how protected the protected sea is.
